AI-Based Road Safety Model Presented by the Principal of Nar Narayan Shastri Institute of Technology

Ahmedabad, March 1। Under the aegis of the Ahmedabad Management Association, the prestigious MOVOCON conference on traffic and road safety was successfully held. Representing Nar Narayan Shastri Institute of Technology, the institute’s Principal and renowned academician, Professor Sailesh Iyer, delivered an impactful presentation on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI). His presentation demonstrated how modern AI technologies are playing a crucial role in reducing road accidents and strengthening traffic management systems.
Presentation of AI-Based Global Case Studies As part of his lecture titled “AI in Global Road Safety – Case Studies and Future Research Trends,” Prof. Iyer elaborated on several international and national examples in detail.
He explained that BOSCH, in collaboration with various state governments in India, analyzed post-crash data using AI. This helped identify the root causes of accidents and led to improvements in road design, such as the installation of rumble strips and structural modifications. Citing the example of Alibaba’s City Brain platform in Hangzhou, China, he highlighted how AI-based traffic signal optimization and surveillance systems have reduced traffic congestion and improved emergency response times.
Referring to Tesla Autopilot, he explained that the system assists drivers through features such as lane keeping, adaptive cruise control, and collision avoidance. He also elaborated on how Highways England uses AI-based CCTV and sensor data to detect potential accidents on highways in advance and take preventive measures. Through these examples, Prof. Iyer clearly emphasized that AI is not merely a theoretical concept but is effectively saving lives in real-world scenarios.
Analysis of Road Accident Statistics in India
During his presentation, he showcased state-wise road accident statistics of India, stating that more than 200,000 people lose their lives every year due to road accidents. He categorized the major causes of accidents into three segments Human and behavioral factors such as overspeeding, drunk driving, distraction, and driver fatigue; nfrastructure-related issues including poor road design and damaged roads; and Vehicle and systemic factors such as poor maintenance and weak enforcement of traffic rules. Linking these challenges to AI-based solutions, he explained that data-driven decision-making systems can significantly help in reducing these problems.
How AI Saves Lives
Explaining this in detail, Prof. Iyer stated that AI strengthens road safety in multiple ways, including real-time traffic monitoring, driver behavior analysis, traffic signal optimization, predictive accident analysis, automated emergency services, and smart incident detection systems. He emphasized that an integrated AI system has the capability to prevent accidents proactively rather than merely responding after they occur.
Future Research Trends
In the final phase of his lecture, he highlighted future research directions such as advanced object detection and automation for all vehicles, automated trauma management systems, human activity recognition within vehicles, specialized classification of accident-prone zones, and robust accident management systems on critical highways.Prof. Sailesh Iyer’s presentation at the MOVOCON conference was highly appreciated. Through his knowledge, research perspective, and practical examples, he proved that AI-based solutions can bring revolutionary changes in the field of road safety in India and across the world. His participation once again reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation. It is noteworthy that MOVOCON and NSIT-IFSCS are working together as academic collaborators.
